The Giver is a story held in the future where things have changed drastically. At certain ages, you get new things. You have no power over what you do, for your spouse, house, and more.  At 12 you get a desired job. In the story, there are no emotions such as love and no memories either. Jonas, the main character, attends the ceremony to get his job. But instead he gets the role of the receiver.

After Jonas got the receiver, he is trained by the Giver. He gets to manage memories because this is a very secretive and important job. Jonas wanted to find out more, so he kept asking for more and more memories. But, instead, he finds dark secrets and the truth about his community. So, Jonas takes his baby brother and runs away. Before they are both in danger. Then, they finally are away from their town.

I liked this book because the way Jonas used his job to find out his truth was the right thing to do. He could’ve saved more people but he only saved himself. I disliked the way how his parents were killing babies because that was part of their job, and how they were disappointed when Jonas asked about love. I would recommend this book to people that like science fiction.
